Breeding Flowerhorn Part 6
Posted on
Previously we went over the Flowerhorn spawning. We will now go over Flowerhorn behavior after the spawn.
The reat news is that different many other species of Cichlids, Flowerhorn will usually not eat their eggs. With that said, they will display several post spawn activities that many Cichlids display. The female Flowerhorn will take up a position slightly above the eggs and will mouth the eggs almost non stop. The purpose of the female Flowerhorn doing this is to get rid of any eggs that are infertile. but most imporatantly to keep fungus from forming on the eggs. Like many female animals, she will defend the eggs with her life. If you are brave enough to put your hand in the tank near the eggs at this time, she will viciously attack it (and it will hurt). Much of the time she will drive the male away from being directly around the eggs, but not always. Aggression betwen the couple can vary significantly from pair to pair. The male will usually stay aomewaht near the eggs guarding against any other threats, but not be so close as to irritte the female. If you put your hand anywhere in the tank, even on the other end, the male Flowerhorn will attack it. While the male and female will show some aggressive behavior towards each other, they will not usually do any actual damage to each other while the eggs are viable. You can feed them pair while there are eggs without any worry that it will stimulate them to eat the eggs. The Flowerhorn Pair will eat food while they guard the eggs.
